LOTRO Redux

The Halo 3 party was a good time. Much fun was had by all (I hope)!

On a whim this weekend, I downloaded the free Lord of the Rings Online trial. If you recall, I tried out the trial they had at the end of the beta, and found it somewhat lacking. It wasn't bad by any means, but it wasn't particularly memorable. After playing this trial, my previous sentiment largely stands, but a few things are modified.

First of all, I like several of the classes in this game better than those in your standard MMO. Minstrels are your typical healer class, but in addition to heals and buffs, they get to defeat their enemies through the powers of rock n' roll. I mean, how could you possibly go wrong? I'm also a fan of the Captain, which is a frontline DPS/Healer/Buffer, who has a whole string of buffs that you can activate when certain criteria are met.

The graphics in this game vary so violently that I find myself unable to give a solid opinion on them. Some of the animations and backdrops are simply awesome. Playing a Lore-Master (the "wizard" class) is awesome for the really neat animations they get, as is the Minstrel and Captain. The Champion (see "WoW rogue") is a bit lacking in this department, unfortunately. Or maybe it's just the elves.

Actually, the elves in this game kind of piss me off. When is it that people decided that all elf males are effeminate? Elves are supposed to be timeless and beautiful...this does not mean they all wear fucking eyeshadow! GRRR!

A cool feature is the writing, which has thus far been very good. Different races also get different dialogue strings, which is neat. Elves are treated to the fact that the game acknowledges that the character has been alive for hundreds, if not thousands, of years...despite the fact that you're level 1.

So, I dunno. The jury's still out. I've got a couple more days left on my trial, and assuming I don't get sidetracked, then I'll keep playing it.

That's it for now. Peace!

What's wrong with eyeshadow on a beautiful man? I think it looks fab!!

To be fair, it might just be a cultural thing. Men in other countries wear eyeshadow all the time and they are certainly not effeminate. Or, maybe the elves have really long lashes? I've never seen an elf with Male Pattern Baldness, either, so maybe the way their hair grows is just different. Beautiful eyelashes, and long silky hair. Hey, if you knew you were going to live for several thousand years, you'd probably develop excellent hair products too!
