T3h Haloz

So, teh Haloz comes out today. Huzzah! Honestly, if I weren't helping plan a LAN-Bachelor Party with Master Chief as the guest of honor, I don't know if I'd pick it up right away. I'm having so much fun with Team Fortress 2 I almost feel guilty. Almost.

You know, the first time I even heard about the protagonist of Halo, I thought his name was Master Chef, and got really, really confused as to why everyone spoke of him in tones of hushed reverence. I mean, how bad-ass can one be stuck in a kitchen? My mistake was quickly pointed out, and I felt like the world's biggest fool. Well, I would have, but seriously, Master Chief isn't all that much better than Master Chef.

Gamestop called me Saturday afternoon to inform me that I could pick up my pre-order on Monday night at midnight, though I should probably show up at around nine o'clock to start lining up. Like that was gonna happen. I wish there was a button option for this automated call that went something along the lines of "Press 3 to let us know that we are out of our fucking head, that you're going to get a full eight hours of sleep, and that you'll mosey on into our store at your leisure to pick up the copy you so generously pre-ordered." Unfortunately, life continues to dissapoint.

I'll let you know my preliminary thoughts on the game tomorrow, after playing it. Until then, I'll continue to gush about Team Fortress 2.

My only complaint about the game thus far is, of course, the player base. Some of these guys are just dicks. And I'm not talking about your average hard-on. We're talking huge throbbing cocks. First-Person Shooters tend to bring out this crowd, and it's not a crowd I enjoy interacting with. Add voice chat as an integrated feature, and you have a recipe for a seething anger so potent that Darth Vader himself would look at you askance.

For example, last night I decided to play Engineer. Not three seconds after logging into the server, I was ridiculed by three seperate people as being a "camper". I mean, fuck. The game hasn't even started yet, and people on my own team are being assholes. Yeesh.

Not wanting to be burdened with a stigma (see: peer pressure), I changed classes to Medic, a class normally avoided by your average e1337ist due to it's lack of ability to pwn n00bs. Normally, people are happy to see you roll up on them, your stream of red healing goodness filling them with sweet, sweet life.

So I'm sitting there, doing my job, when a Scout runs up on me and starts spamming the button that calls for healing. Not having finished with the Soldier (who will benefit from the health more), I make him wait. This leads to the player of the Scout hopping on v-chat and cursing me out for not healing him. Not a second later I get backstabbed by an enemy Spy, and the Scout starts laughing and informs me that I deserved it for being a shitty healer! GRRR! It's like WoW all over again!

Guys, listen: there are two very important rules that you should keep in mind when playing online games. These are:

  1. Don't be a dick.

  2. Don't piss off your healer.

Follow these rules, and you're golden. Break 'em, and you are immediately filed under "Asshole".

I find that my best classes in this game are "support" classes, such as the Engineer or Medic. I also play a pretty mean spy, when the mood strikes.

That's enough babbling for now. See ya'll soon!
