Thoughts and (re)Views

So, I'm gonna bust out a few reviews real quick:

Books
  • House of Leaves, by Mark Z. Danielewski, is a pretty crazy novel. It's a bit difficult to explain...I guess you could summarize it (poorly) as being a book about a book about a documentary about a haunted house. Sort of. Anyway, it's still a pretty damn good read. I went in expecting a horror novel, and it is...sort of. I was creeped out in the beginning, but the creepiness wore off as the book marched forward. I would recommend it only if you're ready for something a little out of the norm.
  • Fight Club, by Chuck Palahniuk, is pretty much just like the movie, except a little more fucked up. Not a necessary read if you've seen the flick, and if you haven't...then what is wrong with you?!
Movies
Man, there's a lot of these coming out this summer that I want to see.
  • Forbidden Kingdom was pretty much exactly what I wanted it to be, though I wasn't expecting the whole Karate Kid-vibe it delivered. Jackie Chan steals the show in this one, and his fight against Jet Li was pretty amazing. All in all, a good show.
  • Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, however, was kind of a let down. It's no secret that I adore the first one, and the change in focus and humor in this sequel was a bit jarring for me. I mean, it's still funny, but it's mostly potty jokes and racial humor now. Meh. At least Neal Patrick Harris was awesome!
Games
  • Grand Theft Auto IV. It's Grand Theft Auto, but better than ever. They've ditched a lot of the goofy arcade elements of the previous installments, tightened the driving, added a pretty good story, put you in charge of a sympathetic character, and fixed the gunplay mechanics (thank god). Oh, and there's multiplayer, but my only experience with this is a lockup of my system when attempting to join a game. All in all, this game is really quite amazing. My only real quibble is that it induces disk read errors with startling frequency.
In other news...
  • I put my thumbdrive through the dryer, and it still worked. Woo! Then, not a day later, I accidentally put it through an entire wash cycle...and it still works! The lil' bastard's hardcore!
  • I've been playing Oblivion again, and I once again find myself torn by it. It's almost so good...but it just fails on a few very fundamental levels. As a dungeon crawler, it succeeds (so long as you can stomach the attrocious leveling system), except that there's no fucking worthwhile loot anywhere ever! Overall, Morrowind was a far superior game.
  • The recent shark attack in San Diego caused a media frenzy that irritated me to no end, mostly because shark attacks are so incredibly rare as to be a non-issue. This isn't Jaws, people!
That's all for now. Peace!

I'm so paralized by fear I probably won't go into the water once this summer. ;)

Umm...you know, because I went to the beach so much last summer!! Actually, I went to the beach last summer more than I usually do, but it was all in Mexico.
